I know a country (impossible to translate)

Portugal vale a pena

Chamam-se, por ordem, Efacec, Fepsa, Ydreams, Mobycomp, GALP, SIBS, BPI,BCP, Totta, BES, CGD, Stab Vida, Altitude Software, Primavera Software,Critical Software, Out Systems, WeDo, Brisa, Bial, Grupo Amorim, Quinta do Monte d'Oiro, Activespace Technologies, Deimos Engenharia, Lusospace, Skysoft, Space Services.

Portuguese Christmas Traditions II

On Christmas Eve Portuguese families gather around the Christmas tree and the Crèche to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Traditionally, children are in charge of collecting materials for the Crèche.
While some families only display the three main figures, Infant Jesus, Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, others create large scenes with the three figures, the Three Wise Kings, the shepherd and the sheep, lakes (made with mirrors) and hills (made with stones, moss, and clay).

Most children write letters to Infant Jesus asking for presents rather than to Santa Claus. (Not so true anymore because of all the advertising around Christmas speacially on TV)

On Christmas Eve, supper (called "Consoada") consists of codfish with boiled potatoes and cabbage.
After the meal, people eat traditional fried desserts (very healthy ;) ): "filhoses or filhós", "rabanadas", "azevias", and "aletria" wich is a vermicelli sweet with eggs (typical of Douro and Minho region). Another traditional dessert is "Bolo Rei".
In addition to these desserts there are many other that differ from region to region.

Some families attend the Midnight Mass (called "Missa do Galo"). After the Mass people gather around the table and have supper (called "Ceia de Natal").

In some regions of the country, carolers sing Christmas carols (called "Janeiras") in the streets.

Some families will open the presents (that are displayed around the Christmas tree) on Christmas Eve around midnight.
Others open them in the morning of the 25th, Christmas Day.
Some families put one shoe ("sapatinho") of each child next to the chimney (since most of the kitchens in Portugal have one) or next to the fireplace instead of a stocking.

On Christmas Day, people eat stuffed turkey for lunch and the traditional desserts.

During the holiday season towns are decorated with lights.

The festivities end on January 6, "Dia de Reis".

Portuguese Christmas Traditions I

Bolo-Rei , or King Cake, is a Portuguese seasonal specialty. The traditional Christmas bread of the nation, Bolo-Rei is a fruitcake shaped in a ring to symbolize the crowns of the Magi. In the cake there are two surprises: one is a little present like a fake ring, or a little doll, or a medal. The other is not as welcomed. There is a raw broad bean. Whoever finds the charm must buy next year's Bolo-Rei and share it with all those present when the original charm was discovered.

Even though it is said in Portugal that there are 365 recipes for cod (one for each day of the year), for Christmas Eve the tradition is to serve simple boiled cod. From the northern part of the country to the south, even among non-Catholic families, you will find cod accompanied by potatoes and cabbage and sometimes chickpeas.

Another traditional sweets are Filhoses, Sonhos (dreams) that consist in diferent kinds of fried dought, some of them filled with sweet potato or sweet chickpea home made filling, and sprinkled with sugar and cinamom.

Sabores de Natal da Popota

Portuguese girls have you bought? It is a great book and it is only 2€ to help the elder and the Red Cross.

If you find him please call me ;)

In my way......

Cocoa Brownies (With Walnuts!) - It is not my fault!!!! this recipe was in my way and i had to share it with you ;)

Soft butter, for greasing the pan

Flour, for dusting the buttered pan

4 large eggs

1 cup sugar, sifted

1 cup brown sugar, sifted

8 ounces melted butter

11/4 cups cocoa, sifted

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup flour, sifted

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Butter and flour an 8-inch square pan.1 cup of crushed walnutsIn a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the eggs at medium speed until fluffy and light yellow. Add both sugars. Add remaining ingredients, and mix to combine.Pour the batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan and bake for 45 minutes. Check for doneness with the tried-and-true toothpick method: a toothpick inserted into the center of the pan should come out clean. When it's done, remove to a rack to cool. Resist the temptation to cut into it until it's mostly cool.

Hairy Portuguese Women :-P

Giulio Zucchini - Lisbon - 12.12.2007
Donne portoghesi: baffute o piaciute?

Stereotypes:
Hairy Portuguese women
The French and Spanish joke goes that Portuguese women have moustaches.
If Portuguese women have moustaches, it's not because of militant police. The sad stereotype of what beauty should be for the female sex is not a provocation related to the fight for equality, as in Turkey where in May 2007, the women of the Kader association donned fake moustaches to criticise the absence of women in parliament. The hairiness of Portuguese ladies is a strictly Mediterranean criticism.

(thanks to Cafe Babel)

The truth is one my very first conference (in 2000, back in the day;-)), one of the British participants actually commented that he was quite surprise to see that women in Portugal looked nice! And modern! :-P

PS - of course this crap news *had* to be writen by an Italian man
PPS - another steryotype!: all Italian men are machistas

Countdown

Beautiful people should pay a tax?

That's what the Argentinian writer Gonzalo Otalora defends in his book "Ugly!"

As pretty people seem to get all the breaks, they should be taxed for their "advantage" ;-)

He has presented the proposal of the new law to the Casa Rosada ;-)

See the whole interview to BBC: "Argentina: Ugly people strike back"

Another Christmas Joke

Good news

The true Christmas spirit...

I want to let you all know about a cool non-profit that is doing great things: Kiva

Kiva allows individuals to make $25 loans to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance). By doing so, individuals like you provide affordable working capital for the poor (money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc.), empowering them to earn their way out of poverty.

It's a new, direct and sustainable way to fight global poverty, and the way I see it, I get a higher return on $25 helping someone build a future than the interest my checking account pays.
Anyways, please check out the site: KIVA.

Please remeber this i'm talking about loans, that of course will be repaid. The repaid rate is 93,5% of the loans. You have Star rates for the Field's Partners that goes up to 5 stars with a 99,7% repaid rate. After you've been repaid you can collect the money or loan again.

I haven't make my loan yet, but i will do it, but first I have to choose the right business.... hmm i'm thing on something to do with food, maybe a restaurant :D
My friends, that introduce me to KIVA, loaned to an old lady to buy a cow in Azerbaijan ;) cool isn't it?

The launch...
It wasn´t really a launch because the album wasn't for sale in the shops....
The Record Company (EMI) delivered it in the central offices of the major shops... but they didn´t put it for sale yet. We went to Colombo to try and buy it, but we couldn't...
Then we went to see XL Femme. Marisa didn't show (she doesn´t belog to the XL Femme anymore) and the album wasn't for sale... Is the tought that counts... Even so, congratulations Miguel, Ricas e Marisa for the new album :D

The first single's video clip is available in their web site/blog.

Feliz dia da Defenestração! :-P

My dear non Portuguese friends: apologies for the Portuguese (and for doing it for the 2nd time in a row), but, you see, today we celebrate, after 367 years, having thrown the Spanish out of the window - quite literally :-P
